The Boston Shaker is a two-piece cocktail shaker consisting of a metal bottom and mixing glass top. The cocktail is built in the mixing glass so customers can see the drink contents being poured and created in front of them. Once the cocktail has been built and ice is added, the steel section is inserted on top and the contents are shaken (usually for 10 seconds).

When applying ice to the contents of the cocktail shaker, a separate Hawthorn Strainer can be used to keep the partially melted ice from falling into the cocktail glass.
